Hello readers.

Obviously, as I'm sure you've noticed, I haven't updated.

I've been debating for a few weeks with shutting down OSRTS for the summer, or for however long it takes for my health and subsequent emotional health situations to calm down.

Part of me believes that's the best idea for me right now. An equal part of me believes that would be doing those who come here a great disservice.

Since being diagnosed with a thyroid disease, I've come across numerous people--incidentally, largely women--who also struggle with thyroid issues. Since developing self-esteem and body image issues in the wake of said disease, I've come across even more people who have recounted their stories, shared their feelings--commiserated, really, whether face-to-face, in a comment here or in an email, and whether those feelings of self-doubt and dislike have stemmed from a thyroid disorder or not.

Health-wise, at the moment, the planned removal of my thyroid has been indefinitely postponed. The medication I've been taking is steadily doing its job, but surgery hasn't been taken off the table--realistically, it's still the natural solution. I'm taking some time to let the medicine work, to let my body heal a little as it is and to get in a better place to face the inherent difficulty of a major surgery. In the meantime, the eye component of my disease has worsened--at least in my own eyes, however correct they may or may not be--and I've found myself suddenly and uncomfortably self-conscious and unhappy.

On the one hand, then, I could halt all blog activity for a while until I feel better--namely better about myself and what I look like right now (or in the near future). On the other hand, however, I could stand behind everything I've ever said about style--namely that it's got nothing to do with what you look like and everything to do with the way you walk around.

Lately, I admit to looking down or away or nowhere at all when walking around.

My story, though, is clearly your story, too, or at least a variation. And if I met you, or read a comment or email, or heard your story through a friend, I would tell you that while you may feel lost, while you may not be able to recognize the person you see in the mirror, while you may ache, you are still you--even that you are becoming the best version yourself you will know. You just don't know that yet.

So, with that in mind, I'm taking a tip from my own page and will not be placing OSRTS on hiatus. I will, however, be posting once a week only for at least the duration of the summer. I'll be updating every Wednesday from here on out, and I can't promise those updates will include outfit photos. Eventually, they may, but it really depends on how I'm doing. More often, posts will likely feature the other regular content you've been able to find here since the blog's beginning. Because of recent spamming in the comments section, I've turned on the comment moderation system. Commenting will likely be a little tougher for a while, but I hope it will be temporary.

I've said it before, but I must say again how much I appreciate the kindness you've shown, the patience you've granted, the thoughts you've thought and the emails you've sent while I've been going through this difficult transition. So often, typing in these little boxes feels almost false and totally solitary, but you've consistently reminded me why I started--and why I continued--this blog.

I'm continuing on now because that's all we can ever really do. Life marches on. I, and OSRTS, will, too.

So, maybe it's kind of a passe, Lohan thing to say, but lately, I've been living in leggings, so much so that my favorite pair--plain, ultra-cheap black leggings I bought at Target a few years ago--have become so threadbare I'm starting to think I should pass them off as sheer leggings. The solution to my problem? Well, more leggings, of course. Maybe even a pair or two that really are sheer to spare the others that same over-worn fate.

Probably unsurprisingly, then, I'm in the mood for leggings with special details: an extra-long, bunchy length, motorcycle-style seaming, bold patchy piecing--subtle cool that feels infinitely fresher than rehashed '90s prints. My favorite pair out of this bunch is probably the T-stirrup Diesels, but for the first time in basically ever, I can say I really love the Margielas, too.

I didn't even realize a month had passed.

I've been gone, I know. I've been buried under a mountain of worry and doctor appointments and preparations and, somewhere in there, celebrations of my 28th birthday.

I've mentioned here I have a number of health issues, one of which is a thyroid condition called Graves' Disease. And after dealing with it for two years, the time has at last come I must deal with it definitively.

This week, my Shout! Omaha column is about where I am, what's coming and--in the end--why I haven't been compelled to update OSRTS:

Since I became a style columnist, I’ve dispensed a lot of advice on “body image.” For every word I’ve written on the irrelevance of size and shape, I’ve handed out two more in real life to women worried about the way they look. I’ve made it my personal mission to prove style is all about the way you walk around, the way you carry yourself—not a designer label, or a curve of a thigh, or a gap between teeth.

I believe that. I really do.

But lately, I’ve been having trouble believing it for myself.

I will fully disclose I’ve always been thin—it’s just the way I was built. And sure, I have everyday complaints: My feet are too small, my hips are curvier than I’d like, my skin is perpetually dry, my hair isn’t very shiny.

None of these things ever mattered in the grander scheme.

Two years ago, I noticed my eyelids looked a little uneven. I thought one—which has been droopy since I was a kid—was just out of whack. It turned out to be an early sign of Graves’ Disease, an autoimmune disease that causes the thyroid to become enlarged and overactive. Because the thyroid controls the speed of body processes, I've been running fast: I have a racing heart, heightened anxiety, an intolerance to heat, bulging eyes and a bevy of other symptoms. I rejected the most common solution—radioactive iodine, which essentially kills the thyroid—for an alternative, natural treatment.

A year later, it isn’t working.

At the end of this week, I’ll be 28. The day after, I’ll start taking a high dose of antithyroid medication in preparation for a thyroidectomy, or the removal of my thyroid. Doctors hope I’ll be ready for the procedure in a month. Afterward, I’ll have a scar above my collarbone, thyroid hormone replacement medicine, and, in all likelihood, a slower metabolism that will result in a different number on the size tags inside my jeans.

I’m afraid. And angry. And all the things anyone would be.

See, I have that same silly idea of what I should be, what I should look like, why that matters so much. And while the idea of replacing my wardrobe isn’t entirely unappealing—I mean, really, the possibilities there—it is entirely unsettling. Our body images are affected by those unrealistic outside expectations, but they’re also crafted on our inner visions of who we are and who we want to be.

I don’t know exactly who I’ll be in six weeks. Yes, I will be the same girl into fashion and Belle & Sebastian and Wallace Stevens and dinner at M’s Pub. But what she’ll look like? What her healthy body will be? I don’t have a tidy answer today.

I’ll let you know.

In the meantime, if you see me, remind me I’m here, and will be, and that—the way I carry that—is the thing that really matters.

OSRTS is, in part, a lot about what I look like. And because right now I see sickness and a big question mark underneath it, I haven't quite wanted to look at all of it. So I haven't posted.

But this weekend, I am determined to do so. I have a couple of outfits to post, and I have some other musings, so I'll start working on them. For the next little while, I appreciate your patience, your kindness and your continued support of OSRTS. The blog and I aren't going anywhere--we're just a little under-the-weather.

I am, however, working on being hopeful.

I am forever talking about wardrobe basics, probably because I'm so dependent on them myself. I narrow down the closet every six months, and when it inevitably fills up again, I re-narrow. Of course, every "narrowing" reveals a larger leftover wardrobe, but the idea is one I'm not willing to give up.

One day, I will have the perfect closet: easy, beautiful basics, each one perfectly suited to the next. I dream of picking out a blazer here, a blouse there, a pair of jeans, a pretty bag, a scarf and a pair of shoes with my eyes closed. I'd like to come home at the end of the day, slip into a dress, pull out a trench and wear both with the same shoes I wore all day. Essentially, I want everything to go together, and I want each one of the pieces to be clean and timeless (after all, what's the point if I have to keep narrowing once I achieve this dream?).

Style doesn't have to be all fuss and muss. It can really be about key pieces.

And so, in an effort to refocus both our shopping efforts and our daily getting-dressed routines, my sister, Sarah, and I are introducing osrts.keypieces, a sister site to OSRTS dedicated to scouting out beautiful basics, looking at ways to wear them, finding out which ones are the favorites of readers and fellow bloggers, and sharing what we do with them once we add them to our own closets.

Of course, along the way, we'll likely be lamenting a little that we both often have to wait for pretty things--while, as Sarah puts it, we aren't destitute, we do have to shop smartly. We'll touch in with our various modes of saving, but that's part of any key piece: Each is an investment of the truest order, and, for those who may fear we're going materialistic, let me just say there are few pieces in every wardrobe that hold the emotional value like those you for which you saved, those you earned, those you thought you might never have but do. Because you love them. Because they make you feel beautiful. Because you wear them.

Because they're the key pieces.

The digest has been a long time in coming, I know, but today, I'd like to welcome you properly to the March Outfit Digest--and the new OSRTS, now at www.osrts.com. (Don't worry if you've kindly got a link to me; it will redirect.)

I so appreciate all the comments from longtime readers and new ones alike, and I'll be taking your suggestions into consideration as I press on with OSRTS content (look for: more local, shopping and a bit more personal updates). Posts are probably not going to come more than two or three times a week, but I promise I'll make them worth your while when they do.

So today, I give you five outfits from the last month, all in a new larger format on the opposite side of the screen. (The links, by the by, are all the same over there to the right, even if some look a little different.) I'm going to go from latest to oldest, just to keep things concurrent with the normal flow of photos here--and I will return to the Uniform Project. Hello, faithful readers.

I'm officially closing Reader Question Week--I know, I know, I didn't get to all the questions in my lineup--but never fear. All remaining questions will be answered on the regularly scheduled Sundays to come.

So what have I been up to that's been keeping me busy? Several exciting new endeavors.

First, as some of you know, my style column on fashion in the Omaha Metro and fashion at large has found yet another new home. I started writing my little column (I call it "little" out of habit) in 2006 for the Omaha Reader; after a three-year run, I moved it to the Omaha City Weekly, a fellow alternative newsweekly in the city. Now, after some jostling I won't go into here, I'm excited to report the column will live on--with its original moniker, Shop Talk--in Shout!, a new alternative newsweekly set to hit the Omaha stands in a week or so. It will be the same column it's always been, no matter the name, full of local news and trends and, of course, the tips I can't help but hand out.

Second, I've been offered an amazing opportunity to serve as editor for the new fashion channel at COLOURlovers.com, a social network with a focus on color trends, inspiration and creativity in personal and professional realms. The CL blog is in the beginning stages, but every post will look at how color plays its integral role in fashion. And, for those who can't get enough of my personal stylings, yes, I'll be posting a weekly outfit over there, too. The site is currently undergoing its transformation, but I encourage you all to stop by and poke around when it's up; I've been a member for the last year, making color palettes and pretty patterns, and it's soothing and challenging and stimulating and utterly cool all at the same time.

What does all this mean for our fair OSRTS? Well, you tell me. I can promise you only style remains the same will soldier on, but I'd like to streamline it to both your and my tastes. In the last six months, I've limited the content here to five categories: outfits, reader questions, inspiration, wishlist finds, and season picks. And essentially, I'd like to preserve all those elements here; if I had to pick just two to keep, I'd pick the outfit posts and reader questions, as I suspect those are why you come and, truthfully, they're why I keep going.

So what would you like to see here? Would you like more personal content? Would you like a broader scope? Would you like to see a little less of something and a little more of something else? Is it time for a redesign?

Let me know. I'm here for myself, in some respects, but this blog is nothing without you. Let's make the new OSRTS together.

reader question no. 18: the teaching job.

Today's multipart question comes from reader Mimi, who's about to embark on a teaching journey in South Korea. Here's what she says:

"I'm moving to South Korea in March to teach English. Aside from working as a freelance voice and piano teacher, this is my first ever teaching job. I should mention that I will not be teaching in a regular day school, but rather in an English intensive after school program and will be working with Korean kids aged 6 to 12. I've asked HR at my school if there is a dress code and they said that there isn't, which I was surprised by.

"Even though there is no dress code, I still want to look sharp and put together. Like you, one of my favorite basics is the American Apparel U-Neck Dress. Do you have any suggestions on how I can work this dress to make it teacher appropriate? In addition, do you have any ideas on budget-friendly wardrobe updates for a rookie teacher?"

I love both parts of Mimi's question. The first part appeals to me because I do, as she noted, love the hell out of my AA U-neck dress. I have two--the short-sleeved version and the long-sleeved counterpart--and I wear them all the time. I'm always trying to think of new ways to work with it, especially on days the tightness is a little to much for me to bear openly (let's face it--this item is one of the tightest pieces of clothing ever made).

So let's take a look at some ideas on how to professionalize it before we get to the second part of Mimi's question. The biggest obstacle you've got to overcome with this dress to make it work-appropriate is the aforementioned tightness--and the mid-thigh-skimming length, and the backlessness. I don't wear this dress to the office myself, but then, I've never really thought about doing the first look I've prepped until, well, I made it:

Here, a long, almost dress-like shirt perfectly conceals all the bits you might not want to reveal to your colleagues (unless they involve a really cute one who takes you out for a very nice dinner or three first). A wide waist belt (this one is used in homage to the late and very greatly missed Alexander McQueen) gives a clean, shapely look to the shirt while a structured top layer adds what we think of when we think "professional."

A more relaxed look is based on one I like to wear all the time--a loose sweater layer on top of the dress, again rendering the dress itself to a more pencil-skirt-esque look. You could nip this in with a wide or thin belt, again, for a more polished effect. Also cool? A little vest.

The second part of Mimi's question is one I think all us girls ask at some point: How do we update our wardrobes? My answer to that is simple--a good arsenal of classics. Rather than fussing with too many trends--especially if you're someone like Mimi, who's going to be packing her whole wardrobe for transport--a full stock of the most important basics every woman should have in her closet will get you very, very far. Keeping things neutral will allow you to mix and match everything you've got--and I firmly believe you can get each one of those pieces for fewer than $100.

So, I've put together a capsule wardrobe of must-haves. These 18 pieces will get you from work to drinks to dinner with that hot date--just add a few fitted tees, a few modern loosely fitted tees and accessories and you're good to go absolutely anywhere.

Long cardigan, striped tee, white shirt, classically shaped little black dress, crew-neck sweater, black blazer.

reader question no. 17: the vintage ysl blouse.

Today's question comes from my sister Sarah, who's prepping to spend her first Valentine's Day with her beau since they got married in September. They're headed to one of our favorite fancy haunts in downtown Omaha, and Sarah would like to wear a vintage YSL blouse she's had for a while--she just can't quite figure out how to work with it.

These blouses, I think, are some of the easiest YSL pieces to find in thrift stores (at least in the Omaha Metro). And while they have a classic secretary style--puffed shoulder, blouson cuff, pussy bow--they don't have a classic fit. Sarah has several of these, and some fit her better than others; the heart-print blouse in question is, however, rather loose:

Bagginess aside, the other thing to watch out for with vintage blouses such as this one--which is relatively new to the vintage scale--is a dated look. Counter the poufiness with crisp tailoring, bold footwear and the creation of a waist.

First, I decided to play with the obvious secretary theme, because sometimes, the obvious theme is the most successful (and in Sarah's case, it's a natural--she rocks sexy secretary better than anyone I know). Trim basics tone down the blouse: A classic cardigan will nip it in, and a sharp pencil skirt (a must-have for every closet) offers understated grounding. Patterned tights and oxfords are timeless counterpoints.

I've mentioned my jealousy of my sister's small collection of cropped trousers, haven't I? Here, I pick a pair with pleats and tapering to again offset the top's volume, nipped this time with a wide waist belt. The same effect could be achieved with a high-waisted paperbag trouser; I like the cropped variety to add a little airiness to what could otherwise be an overwhelming amount of fabric.

I really like the idea of pairing volume at the top with something form-fitting and slight below, but Sarah doesn't prefer miniskirts. Instead, I went with a little pair of pleated shorts, which offer some movement and coverage while still letting the shape of the leg counter the top. A little tweed jacket offers contrast in shape and print, and vintage-inspired heels make this look more eclectic. One of the easiest (and, on the other hand, most challenging) ways to modernize vintage items to pair them with varied textures, prints and shapes; keep things in the same color scheme, match large and small prints, and make sure to include solid base layers to pull it off.

I couldn't help but include a leggings look--I see a voluminous top, I think leggings. It's probably the result of being a child of the '80s and early '90s; the danger in doing it is looking like a child of the '80s and '90s. Modern legging looks get help from those aforementioned tailored items, in this case an angular jacket that accentuates the waist. Similarly angular heels carry the idea from top to bottom.

I'm finally returning to blogging this week after an unintended month-long vacation. What with moving and working and breaking up and being there for friends who've recently been having a rougher go at life, I've been extraordinarily bogged down--and, at night, either mired in freelance or too tired to do anything more than just sit.

I want to thank all of you, though, for faithfully coming back to check on things, leave comments, become fans and followers, and submit questions. I'll try not to leave things so long again--or, if I do, at least give y'all a little note somewhere in there. But this week, to really thank you properly, I'm making the blog all about you--I'm here to answer your questions. I've got six in the bag, so let's get started.

Today's question comes from reader Sophia, who needs a few ideas on how to wear a pretty pink dress in the winter.

The dress in question:

My first inclination on how to accessorize this dress stems maybe from my recent focus on my own uniform--to add a top layer or two that won't detract from the bold, ruffly bodice. In general, I like to pair items with this kind of architectural detail with soft, understated items that won't detract from the stellar focus--in this case, those ruffles. Too many textural details around it will overwhelm both the dress and the wearer, and you always want to make sure you're wearing your clothes rather than having the clothes wear you.

My first idea, then, is to top this with a loosely structured blazer--something open and buttonless and flowy--to add a more feminine layer of warmth:

Of course, the deep colors here--I chose navy, but black or dark grey or even white above and black below--tone down the femininity so the dress can really take center stage. A couple sparkly accessories--again, not too many--and a classic shoe shape toe the line between girly and grownup.

Here, I have another more casual spin on the unstructured layer--a belted cardigan, wispy over-the-knee socks (I'd scrunch them down just a little, a la Burberry Prorsum), and chunky sandals make the dress a little less formal--appropriate, say, for grabbing drinks with the girls on a Saturday night. Again, I chose an open-front cardigan so, even when belted, the detailed bodice peeks through. For an extra leg layer, I'd go for a pair of grey or black leggings; personally, I feel my toes complaining when I layer socks over tights. But maybe that's just me.

Finally, I wanted to work with a vest, as Sophia mentioned considering layering a vest over the top of the dress. I think it works, especially if you want to wear a second very structured item, like this Elizabeth & James blazer. The hard lines and crisp tailoring can stand against the dress thanks to--you see the theme here--a soft layer between it and the dress. Funky zippered leggings and flats make this a more eclectic, slightly tougher look than the rest--always a good way to make a frilly piece more modern.

Any of these looks can be topped with a cozy wool coat and scarf, too, but I understand the desire to shed those before going into your destination. It's OK--I run through the cold, too. Hopefully, the added layers will keep you warm enough on the walk from the car to the door.

So, today is the last day followed by the last night I'll live in my little apartment.

Up there? That's my closet, and it's always been in some form of disarray--discarded bags tossed overhead, winter coats and blazers mixed in with summer blouses and skirts. I try to keep everything sorted by type of article, generally--pants together, dresses together, etc.--and sometimes attempt to organize the T-shirts and leggings and whatever else below the hanging items into, again, some semblance of organization.

The truth is, my closet was almost always pulled apart, its contents spilling into little baskets or the shoe area, favorite cardigans and jackets removed entirely to spend almost all their time draped over the footboard of the bed. The laundry pile started out as nothing and grew and grew and grew, and eventually I shaved it down, pared the whole wardrobe, tried to start somewhat fresh. I never did. Some things, I could never leave behind.

A few days ago, I cleaned out the coat closet in the entryway, and underneath some luggage and a blanket and a couple tote bags, I found the dry cleaning I'd brought with me when I moved in back in 2007. I'd just forgotten it was there--and I'd certainly forgotten what was in those two little shopping bags. I pulled out dresses and jackets I didn't even remember buying, and I kept almost all of them.

When I moved out of my parents' house, I was afraid. I'd graduated from college two years before I moved out, and at that time, at the end of 2004, I wasn't well. I certainly wasn't the girl you see here. By September 2007, I'd gotten better--I'd started to figure out who I was and how to be that on my own terms. But I was missing the key "my own terms" ingredient. So one week, I found an apartment, signed a lease, packed my stuff and jumped in.

My apartment ended up coming with a lot of problems--honestly, I've lived in quite a few apartments in my time, and this one was the worst in terms of water issues and maintenance calls and, this week, car burglaring. But between all of that, it's also been the place where, after so many years of searching, tossing, paring down, reorganizing and reimagining, I finally, finally became myself.

It's true I can't let go of some things--some things change your life, and you'll never be without them afterward. I fell in love when I was 20, and everything changed. I had my heart so broken when I was 22, I went a little crazy, and everything changed. I realized I could come back stronger, better, and everything changed. And then, I did. And tomorrow, everything will change again.

I like to tell everyone who comes here that style is about the way you walk around--that it's more about you, and who you are, than the clothes you're wearing. I still believe that. Because the clothes can change, you see, as can you, but to realize you're you underneath that, always, to bravely be that no matter the changes, well. That's style.

Remembering the path you've taken, and embracing it wholly for what it was and for what it wasn't, is the only way we can move forward. It's not that who I am now is so unrecognizable from who I was then, merely that I just finally figured out I was who I was meant to be all along. Tomorrow, when I start arranging my new closet, hanging up the dresses I love in this moment and the dresses I've just found from the past moment, I suspect they'll all look like they're meant to go together.

Because they're mine. Because I know what that means, now, to own yourself. To have style.

I want to take a break from all the blog project business today to lust after some of pre-fall 2010's prettiest offerings (surely that's inspiration, too, isn't it?). I've said before I really love (and almost prefer) these small, between-season collections; this year's put forth sharp military tailoring (which seems to indicate a more defined waist is on the horizon), every shade of loden green available, heavily layered separates, and thick-textured fabrics and furs. This pre-fall also saw a lot of talk about the mini-season's "cliches," the clothing's tendency to be either basic essentials or wacky designer experiments.

The way I see it, those are kind of the cliches of every season, right? And if they are--and if the clothes look like pre-fall 2010--I'll take them without complaint.

So, technically, I know this is cheating--this wool jacket is really outerwear, and I did take it off once I arrived at the party to which I was headed (though I suppose I could point out here that cold-weather coats are integral to wardrobes because they're the first thing others see when you come inside on blustery days, and having more than one allows you to top outfits appropriately and creatively). But truthfully, I've had this dress since April and, while I've worn it a fair number of times, it's never gotten the blog love it deserves. My amazing brother-in-law picked this out for my birthday, and he did such a good job--it's my favorite dress now, and every time I wear it, I think I really should look into securing a few more pretty house dresses for my repertoire.

We all know about my American Apparel obsession by now, right? It's so glaringly obvious I can't resist the piles of basic, many-colored cotton goodies made under the pervy eye of Dov Charney, I couldn't possibly say I prefer to buy any other brand more (though, perhaps that would change were my bank account to see some serious long-term padding).

At any rate, I have this bad habit of buying one item one AA time and hanging on to it until it's positively wearing away at the seams. This miniskirt is undoubtedly my favorite of all my AA pieces (as evidenced by its more-than-regular appearance here at OSRTS), and the last few times I've worn it, I've picked away more strings than usual from the already-unfinished hem. This is all to say I really do need to buy in multiples, or at least replace these kinds of staples more often than I do. Replacing denim or outerwear just feels so much more natural to me, maybe because those things more often feel outgrown or outdated. Then again, maybe I just attach as many memories to my clothes as I do certain songs--this little skirt has seen so many nights out (or in), I just can't imagine really parting with it. Or even replacing it.

But one of these days, I will. I suspect I'll keep it for a little while, though, even then, until I let go of all the all the pairings it anchored, all the places it went or stayed, all the loves it found and lost as it wore on.

I meant to do something far less literal with this new plaid, but Omaha's been hit with a crazy snowstorm/blizzard combo in the last three days that's left both my wardrobe creativity and my blog schedule in a complete shambles.

Even though I'm stuck inside again today, at least, I'm thinking of getting something together--at least as long as I can find a ride to the grocery. Ten inches of snow plus semi-plowed streets plus Lindsey's iffy driving equals badness. But I'm sure someone loves me.

reader question no. 15: glasses.

This week, we have a question from reader (and Tolani scarf giveaway winner) Julianna. A glasses-wearer and bob-sporter, Julianna wanted some ideas on working with her specs, and it's a good request.

I've worn glasses for (scarily) about 17 years now, and I never really thought about them as an accessory until I was seven or eight years into that career. But the day I secured my first pair of black plastic frames, I knew I'd see them as a statement worth making--after all, the most utilitarian things should be the prettiest, right? We see them all the time, so we should consider them when they're entering the picture.

The good news on glasses, I say, is that as long as they fit your face properly, they'll go with anything you choose. Now, it's true I don't usually wear my glasses when taking photos for OSRTS; the main reason I don't, I admit, is partially because I spend a little time on eye makeup and partially because said eye makeup gets a little ruined on account of my eyelashes being pretty long (they hit the lens, and after an hour or so, separate into an annoying little V shape).

But truth be told, glasses can be as much a part of a outfit as any other piece--and if you want them to, they can actually set the pace for the direction of your wardrobe. They serve as an immediate style statement, and playing off them can create some of the coolest, most cohesive looks around.

I've put together five outfits today--a few casual styles, a casual and formal variation on an easy shift and jacket, and an ensemble for a night out with the ladies. Because I'm a fan of bold glasses, I've used mainly chunky plastic frames, but any will do. I tend to put together preppy looks with a little edge when glasses are involved--they're less serious but just as smart. Don't hesitate to work off some of the obvious ideas--sexy secretary or, with Julianna's bob, the swingy '20s. Some of those shapes and ideas can be incorporated into looks, giving the glasses a reference point.

A cool leather jacket and booties, for example, make sense with '50s-inspired hornrims.

Thick, slightly catty frames here work with a quirky, mixed-style look--tough moto jeans and heavy-hardware boots, an eclectic top and scarf, and a big slouchy bag. It's breezy and artsy and bold--I might have to look into this one myself.

I love vintage frames--they're unexpected shapes these days, but still entirely classic. So here, I've worked in a throwback shift shape, paired it with a little cropped jacket and added some funky flats and zippered leggings. And the same idea can be made more formal:

Can you see what I mean about glasses being an awesome accessory?

You can even take them with you when you head out for dinner and drinks at the trendy hangouts.

Maybe a good way to approach glasses is to think of them in the same terms you think of your sunglasses--pick a smaller, everyday-sized shape that riffs off your favorite sunnies and remember how often you wear those, and how cool you feel in them.

I promise, optical specs are just as cool, and a little more fun.

Of course, Saturday night generally doesn't operate with the daytime policy, but it's actually really nice to just sit around in whatever for seven or eight hours once a week. I recommend.

As promised, two outfits worn on Wednesday. I'm starting with my night outfit just because I like it so much. I found this skirt thrifting last weekend and immediately fell in love with it...I just couldn't really think of anything to do with it. After much fussing and reorganizing, I came up with this ensemb, which I think really captures the spirit of both of the blog's 2009 projects, the Recessionista Project and the Uniform Project.

I'm giving myself a sub-challenge now to come up with more ways to wear this gem of a skirt.

I know, I know, I missed a day. This outfit is actually from yesterday, and it's nothing fancy. Work has been beastly and a clogged bathtub left me in leggings and a tank both last night and tonight as I've been trying to sort out all the gunk. So, to make up for this miss, tomorrow you'll get two uniforms--I promise.

That aside, this little ensemble of basics is a good example of what I'm probably wearing when I'm not taking a photo for the blog. There's nothing really wrong with it, but in the blog world, usually, the more unusual, the better. But in real life, basic has its charms.

This is the sort of real variation on my uniform I love--a knit dress and cardigan and leggings are perfect, essential weekend pieces, even if you don't opt to wear them all together.

I will say since I bought this sweater a few weeks ago, I've been sort of obsessed with it; it's just so comfortable. I suspect more cocoons are in my future.

reader question no. 14: the winter hat.

Welcome to the new Reader Question Sunday! I love answering all your questions, and to make the process easier--a proper schedule for me and a certain, timely answer for you--all reader questions will now be answered regularly on Sundays.

Today, we have a question from reader Melanie, who'd like some ideas on a stylish winter hat. She threw scarves and gloves in at the end of her question, too, happily--I love a scarf myself.

The hat shape of the season--the last several, really--is the cloche, a 1920s bell-shaped hat that sits close the head and flares out with a small brim. While vintage cloches were usually made of felt--and subsequently sort of floppy, a la the entire flapper look--today's cloches are a little on the sturdier side.

I like them for their classic shape, as well as their inherent femininity. Stocking caps are well and good when the temperature drops below zero, but they're pretty non-descript (and they can create a staticky mess of a hair situation when you take them off). The cloche is pretty and girly, and the wearer can, with the right accessories, play off the vintage vibe or put a casual spin on it or make it super-modern.

I've paired five cloches with a variety of accessories--some classic pastels, some everyday chunky knits, some trendy studs and sequins. It's fair to say I don't believe in the entirely coordinated winter set. Just as shoes and handbags don't have to match exactly, neither do hats, gloves and scarves. Keep things in the same color/neutral family, but play with texture and detail. The result is a cool, eclectic look you can be assured no one else will have.

Hello, ladies and gents. Welcome to the first of two OSRTS posts today--I've been neglecting the blog so much the last two months, I want to get back to frequent posting for my own benefit as much as to show all y'all how much I appreciate your visits, comments, questions and general awesomeness.

One of the reasons I haven't been super-compelled (at least in the last few weeks) to post outfits has been my fear the ensembles I've been sporting are, in fact, a little boring. But then, looking at them, and at really a number of past blog photos, I just recognized a theme.

Since the middle of the summer, I've been thinking a lot about my uniform--jeans, T-shirt, blazer. I've written about it a little here, and I've posted it a somewhat significant number of times in one form or another. I like it because it's super-easy, comfortable and just classically chic; I actually think a girl (or even a guy) could never go wrong with these three components.

And I believe in that strongly enough to launch The Uniform Project.

Beginning tomorrow, for the next 30 days, I'll be wearing only variations on my basic uniform. That's a first here at the blog--30 outfit posts in 30 days--but I'm ready to accept the challenge. Sometimes the blazer might be a cardigan, the T-shirt might be a blouse, the jeans might be leggings or a skirt. Ideally, all the outfits will have three pieces (top, bottom, top layer), though I hope some real creativity comes out of this. To stay on track, I'm also limiting my shopping list to items that will comply with the project: tees, cardies, blazers, denim, leggings.

The main idea here is to show that cool, stylish dressing doesn't have to be complicated, or crazy expensive, or require a massive wardrobe. You'll see me wearing the same pieces in different combinations, so if that bores you, well, wait until the next day. Remember I am not a super-funky, outlandish girl. There are other blogs for that sort of thing. But the art of style is, in part, about the reinvention of ordinary pieces. And I love ordinary pieces.

I've been thinning out my closet, too, and I hope this project will help me focus on the minimal style I've developed, purchasing new, considered pieces and getting already-owned ones tailored so they all feel right in my closet. I like the idea of having a closet of mix-and-match pieces that all work together--no odd blouse out--and this is a way to help me do that.

But it's for more than just me, or my philosophies. I'm also launching this to give a little back to all of you who come here regularly. I'll be hosting some special giveaway/contest events, and I'll also be answering reader questions. The new day for reader question answers is going to be Sunday; right now, I have four great questions to answer, so that means each Sunday for the next 30 days will have a double post--an answer and an outfit. I'm working on a new header for the reader question segment, too, as it's really the specialty (and my favorite part) of only style remains the same.

That's the general plan for the next month here in blogland: 30 variations on a uniform, some special events and Sunday answers to reader questions. I'm super-excited to get going.

This weekend, I'm finally going to wrap up my spring 2010 favorites before getting to the pile of reader questions you girls have submitted (seriously, you're all awesome, and I'm going to try to do all your solutions justice). So, without further ado, let's take a look at what happened in Milan.

Moschino Cheap & Chic.

When I first started thinking about what to say about this glorious little collection, I thought I'd say that sometimes, I wish I could just trade out my style for another entirely (as if it could be that easy) for something exactly like this--bright and full of bows. But then, upon closer inspection, I thought really, this collection is about all taking the simple, classic shape and making it fresh with nothing more than color, pattern and, of course, a floppy bow. When you look at it that way, it doesn't seem so outside the realms of any stylish girl's closet--and it seems, true to its name, so much more chic than trendy. And then, those shoes. The shoes! If only I could get them in a kids' size 1.

Fendi.

As much as I love Master Karl, I'll admit I'm usually a bigger fan of the Fendi shoes and bags than the clothes. Not so for spring. This season they came out in pretty, easy pastels, feminine sheers and topped with some perfect little slouchy, boxy jackets. I love the makeup color palette that's taken such a firm hold--it's so lovely. I just can't think of another word for it. Totally lovely. I think this collection is so wearable, if you can't afford it, you can at least be inspired by it.

Dear Jonathan Saunders: Please send this blogger the trompe l'oeil T-shirt dress pictured. I promise to take good care of it and wear it in the most fashionable health possible in all seasons while talking about the specific kind of genius you are to reinterpret grunge in the most relevant manner. I can't believe a week has passed since I last posted--I am so, so sorry faithful readers. I promise I'll do better--as soon as I get back from Canada, that is, on the 19th. I'll be buzzing around Montreal and Quebec City, eating pastries and working in hotel computer labs and having a generally awesome time, I'm sure.

reader question no. 13: the wellie.

I'm taking a break from the Spring 2010 picks to turn to the latest batch of reader questions today. This one from my sister, who jet-sets off today for her well-deserved honeymoon with her new hubbie. They're off to Napa and San Francisco, and I'm going to contain my jealousy long enough to dole out some thoughtful ensemble ideas for a pair of shoes purchased especially for trekking through vineyards.

Sarah opted for a non-traditional Hunter rain boot, or wellie, the Lady N, which boasts a sleek partial-fabric construction rather than the classic all-rubber wellie we're used to at this point. It has a versatile riding boot shape, too, and when she told me she'd purchased them, I couldn't help but think the streamlined, refined qualities of the boot would make the it easier to incorporate into a wider range of outfits than the slouchy sweater/leggings combo that immediately springs to mind when planning around any rain boot.

Sarah asked for a few Cali looks and a few colder weather looks for when she gets back home; let's start with the honeymoon suggestions, and of those, let's start with the most obvious.

Here we have a straightforward, classic treatment of any boot: skinny denim, crisp white shirt. I think sometimes the simplest way to go is also the most effective--add a pretty printed scarf around your neck, grab a roomy tote that can hold a bottle or two and a loaf of crusty bread, and you're ready to go on that sweet afternoon picnic. Chic is always easy.

Here we have a twist on the obvious--I replaced the denim with a refined wool short, chose a frillier blouse to offset the ruggedness of the boot, and added some unexpected detail: an embellished knee sock, a funky clutch, a double-wrap belt. This is all about contrasting the hard with the soft, which is a necessity with more utilitarian items like this boot. If you dress them too literally, you really will look like you're going hunting. Playful, pretty accents make them everyday. When the weather gets cold, swap the knee socks for a pair of thick ribbed tights and add a blazer and a chunky scarf.

My favorite Audrey Hepburn movie is How to Steal a Million; in one series of scenes at the beginning of the film, she ends up, of course as the result of a wacky event, running around in a short straight-cut white nightgown, a pink '60s frock coat, full black eye makeup and black patent wellies. I've always wanted to re-create something like that outfit for myself, maybe with a white eyelet shift in place of the nightie. But because the directly interpreted '60s are more my thing than Sarah's, I've adapted that same idea for her--she needs something artsier. This flowy Marni shift is the right choice, and paired with the boots, it's one of those great outfits that looks put-together without being put together (kind of like Auds and her wellies). I think it'd be great for the afternoon walks that turn into dinner dates, so a special tote is a must.

There's nothing wrong with adding another uniform to the winter wardrobe. I took the basic wellington look I already mentioned--sweater and leggings--made the sweater a slouchy dress, added a wide waist belt, thick tights and a scarf--and I think you could wear this one anywhere, any time of the day throughout fall and winter. Mix up the scarves, forget the belt, change up the overcoat (this Vivienne Westwood option is obviously a glorious dream), add a turtleneck layer underneath, tuck a long vest into the belt...you can do a lot with this basic foundation, and I can imagine Sarah playing with it all winter.

I had to do one tongue-in-cheek wasp look, didn't I? I mean, these are essentially equestrian boots, and Sarah does have an amazing T-shirt collection. The most important part of any ensemble is to have a little fun with it--don't take yourself too seriously, be open to the unexpected and you're good to go. It's a philosophy I have to work at remembering all the time. But maybe a good one for a honeymoon, too, right?

lindsey's picks of spring 2010 (part two: london).

I might have to rethink what I've always said about London's fashion week being my least favorite. Maybe it was just the return of Master Bailey for the 25th anniversary of LFW, but something special was in the British air the last week, and I've managed to narrow my love of it down to four collections.

Burberry Prorsum.

We expect this now, right? I'm always going to fawn over Burberry, and there's really nothing to be done about it. So, in short, I love how Christopher Bailey treated the classic trenches, cardigans and skirts this season, twisting and knotting them into trim, tiny, youthful pieces I don't feel too old to wear. And I will never get tired of his little putty-colored socks.

Duro Olowu.

I don't know why I've never really taken much note of the print-happy Duro Olowu before, but I'm betting it's because he's never made these fantastic tacked skirts before, which are so full and beautiful they kind of take my breath away in flat, two-dimensional form. I can't imagine what they'd do to me in person. I know people are talking about the hooded dress, and I agree it's cool, but there's so much here to love--flow, volume, pattern, color, and how the ramped-up combination of all those things still comes out poised and effortless.

Erdem.

OK, so let's address this '90s thing happening. It's been happening for a while, I know--I've just been trying to ignore it, not wanting to ever be compelled to relive my own days of weird, mid-pastel florals and bodysuits. But this season, the '90s resurgence refuses to be ignored; lace and mesh and florals and those same odd colors are everywhere. I'm buying Erdem's reimagining of them, which presents the throwbacks in clean, timeless shapes--straight skirts and little T-shirts are hard to discount, and they certainly make one of fashion's wackier moments easier to swallow. Erdem himself cited '20s shapes and Japanese influences, so my assignation of the '90s trend might be off, but I see colored-lace bodywork and think Kelly Kapowski. That's just me. Thankfully, whatever the true inspiration, Erdem's spring offerings are pretty, versatile and impeccably tailored. This is how I want the '90s to come back, if they have to at all.

Peter Pilotto.

Peter Pilotto makes a fantastic little dress, no? It's wrapped and draped so artfully, I doubt anyone would ever look less than lovely in it. This season, Pilotto added pants, jackets and shorts so short it's best to say they're high-waisted hot pants, but it all says laidback summer. They're perfect for that girl who puts on just a dab of lipgloss and gets all the boys--you know, the one you hate. Unless that is you. In which case, I hate you. But not really. I just want to be you.

Clearly, I am way, way behind on blog business. What with the wisdom tooth situation, Omaha Fashion Week and my sister's wedding (a big OSRTS congrats to Sarah and Matthew!), things have slid a little here in blogland. Not to worry--I'm back this week and totally ready to delve into all the goodness previously promised.

Let's start with those anticipated (at least by me, if not you) picks of NY fashion week, which seems so, so long ago, doesn't it? The designer lineup this year was a tad overstuffed to say the least--sifting through the collections was seemingly neverending, particularly in view of New York's almost unanimous decision to return to basics, whether by turning out sportswear, focusing on shape and color, or just getting back to house roots. And while it's true that collection after collection of basics made my heart explode with joy (finally, I don't have to feel so badly about my minimalism), they also made for perhaps slightly less-than-original impressions. But that's OK. I'm not really complaining. Neat blazers, silk T-shirt dresses, slouchy shorts and sheer tanks sound perfectly all right to me.

It occurred to me when I got home last night I probably should have had someone snap my photo, or should have at least snapped a photo myself of models stomping down Omaha Fashion Week's first runway, but frankly, I was writing too fast to take any photos at all. I hope to get some action shots Saturday, when Sarah's with me, but for now, we'll have to settle for my standard entryway wall.

I didn't go all out last night, but I have to say it kinda looks like I did thanks to the enormity the is the American Apparel circle scarf. I've had it for a while but debuted it last night, and it absolutely made this dress, which I've been wearing all the time lately, look fresh and new and edgy (which isn't a word I get to apply to myself very often). I suspect you'll see a lot of it this fall and winter.

Until then, expect to see this same eye look throughout the week--it's so easy I can't not keep doing it. Just a good five or six sweeps of Laura Mercier eyeshadow in black smoke, blending with a little pale eyeshadow, and two or three coats of classic black Maybelline. Perfection in five minutes or fewer.

I'm sorry for the lack of super-regular posting. I fear the blog is getting a little ignored in favor of mountains of work (as usual) and, today, the impending mustering of bravery for a little wisdom tooth problem.

I hope, however, the week will calm down tomorrow (even if it's because I'm cracked out post-dental work), and then we can get to some of the planned OSRTS programming, including a couple reader questions, a new playlist for the month and, of course, what I'm wearing. Nothing new here, other than to say apparently I have an additional uniform to add to the usual denim/tee/blazer standby. I just can't think of anything easier or more comfortable than tiny knit dresses and sweaters right now. We'll call it my mainly cozy phase.

In the meantime, I'm on the hunt for some pretty, subtly sparkly eyeshadow in my usual purplish-gray and taupe shades. Any recommendations?

Of all the outfits I've worn since starting the blog, I feel like this is the first real "fashion blogger" outfit I've worn--which isn't a bad thing, but at least proof that living in this part of the style world eventually makes a girl eye a dowdy '80s blouse at the Goodwill and see it for more possibilities than she might have before. True, the pussy bow and high puff shoulder are, well, now, but I felt the look was a little risky, maybe trying too hard.

But the I put the whole outfit together, and it felt exactly right. Four dollars snagged one of my new favorite blouses, fashion blogger or no.

Lately, I've felt like mixing the wardrobe up again--not too much, really, but just a little, which is to say I've been missing a little of the old ways as much as I've been trying to embrace the new. I'd like to figure out how to marry the bows and ruffles style I favored two years ago with the stripped, minimal style that's emerged since beginning OSRTS. I'd like to figure out how to be classic and vintage at the same time, simple and girly simultaneously--the Recessionista Project, set to return to the blog this weekend, has been part of that effort. And maybe I just need a few more full circle skirts, or the freedom of tights that comes with fall. But maybe, too--and today I really think this solution is right--I just need to add some super-pretty accessories to the basic palette I've finally solidified.

BeSomethingNew's headbands are so lovely--and, I think, so versatile. The low-profile flowers and bows are delicate and vintagey and, well, understated, thanks to muted shades and flat constructions. They lay like little surprises in the hair, and I can see them working spectacularly with dresses and denim alike. The Messy Bow and Rhinestone Headband, pictured last, at least, is my immediate jones, and what I think could be a first step toward bringing the ideal element of surprise to my perhaps predictable looks. So let's just add some of these to my already massive fall wishlist and see where we end up.

Now that I've gotten a sweater-donning out of my system, I'll take those last romantic, sticky-sweet days of summer before getting down to the more serious business of fall.

I've decided to throw up a monthly mix here on OSRTS--music is such a big part of my life, I just can't (as you've seen) keep it out of my blog. Of course, dedicating a separate blog to it didn't work, either (did y'all know I have three jobs? I do--and three jobs and two blogs is complete madness). The music posts have taken various forms in the last year, and while I will still put up mid-year and end-of-year album lists, I thought maybe the best thing to do was just mix up what I was listening and pass it on to you. Sort of, if you will, OSRTS Radio.

The first mix, the title of which is the title of this post, was a sort of mix survey going around 8tracks.com, where I'll be making all the blog mixes. I didn't spend nearly as much time on it as I normally would on mix (read: obsessing over transitions) because of this one's specific direction, so just look at it as some of my favorite songs--some of my favorite autumnal songs, really, as it came out pretty quiet.

I've had these Pliner Jrs loafers for a few weeks now, and I have to say, they're my new favorite shoes. Those leopard loafers on my fall wishlist? Yeah, they're the same--it's just what you do when you're a 27-year-old woman looking for ideal kids' shoes. You find them, they fit, you love them, you collect them. In this shoe world, variety isn't spicey.

I am so unbelievably tired of summer. I was so looking forward to it back in April, when the spring always seduces me with barely warm sunny days and jacket-needed nights. But now, almost at the end of it, I just stand in front of the closet, defeated, pulling out the same things I've been wearing (plus a new T-shirt from the burgeoning baggy tee collection and a new sheer scarf my mom gave me), hoping they won't come off as lackluster as they seem to me.

I think the scarf makes this one. And I admit, not a little because I kept imagining winding it all around my neck, pairing it with Breton stripes and a red trench, and speaking what I hope won't be terrible French when I'm in Montreal and Quebec City come October.

My sister asked me this week if I had a list of fall must-haves, and I wasn't at all surprised we both did. It seems every year, around the end of August, we both feel like streamlining, reassessing, reallocating and reimagining our wardrobes.

I'm looking to replace basics--they are, as I've accepted by now, the crux of my minimalist wardrobe. And this year, I've got quite the list--but almost all of them are less than $100 a pop, so, really, I could get them all sometime before it snows, right?

One-shoulder knit dress: American Apparel.

I keep meaning to post this dress, which I've had for a minor age. I've worn it twice in the last week (and bought it initially for my sister's bachelorette party in May) but just got around to taking a photo of it. I bought it in another color, too, but I'm still getting used to that one; it isn't, after all, a totally forgiving dress, but that may say something about how I feel about my shape more than how I feel about the dress.

At any rate, I love that it really requires no accessories. Just none. I grab my little honey-colored Hobo clutch, pick a pair of flats and I'm out the door. There's something to be said for simplicity.

This blouse is the last of the little haul I've noticeably scored from Forever 21--and I have an almost uncontrollable urge to pair it next with the bright blue knit pencil skirt that's been pictured on the blog with some light, strappy oxfords...what do you think? Anyway, for most of last winter, I never went to F21--it just got too cheap and too teeny for me. But this summer, I've been happy with the two blouses and one awesome dress I unearthed from the piles of polyblends and purple leggings. But maybe I'm just a little over-enthusiastic now that I've been able to raise my shopping ban a bit.

Don't worry--I haven't forgotten about the Recessionista Project. It'll return, along with a ride-along of sorts as I scour a Goodwill or two in the Omaha Metro. Look for that in August.

I fell totally in love with this Forever21 dress this week, which is something I don't say very often. But the pleats and folds reminded me a little of the stunning work of Project Runway winner Leanne Marshall, and I couldn't resist it. I didn't even feel badly when someone recognized for what it was last night.

I apologize for the unintentional vacation from the blog. I've had a bit of an emotional upheaval in the last week and am just now starting to feel a little like my old self again. New plan: Look amazing all the time. Yes. This is, along with at least one piece of cake a week and Belle & Sebastian on heavy rotation daily, the key to happiness.

I know there's nothing new here. And I know I'm addicted to this blazer--I keep wearing it or carrying it with me even though it's too hot and way too humid for it. I think it's only fitting that my 50th outfit here on the blog is one of the standard uniform I've developed since starting the regular documentation of what I wear--and it's not at all unlike the first one ever pictured here at OSRTS.

I get lazy in the summer--or, as happened this week--when I'm working 10- to 12-hour days every day of the week. And when I'm pooped, I go for the easiest, chicest look I can muster: tee, blazer, denim. In whatever form, it always feels right.

I can't believe we're talking about spring 2010 already. I mean really.

I think you all know by now I fancy a classic man, right? Shirts, trim pants, blazers and jackets, slim ties, oxfords--I swoon. Accordingly, then, I gravitate toward modern-traditional collections and pay attention to perhaps more basic trends: sloppy, ankle-grazing cuffs (a personal favorite of my own to utilize); sheer, fitted, boxy, belted, bomber, sparkly, crinkly and double-breasted jackets (whew); and cool loafers and sneakers all over the place. I'm a little addicted to the drapey, tissue-thin T-shirts skimming boy model torsos this season (mmm), but I'm always ultimately going to be for that strapping lad in a suit.

Burberry Prorsum.

So, here is one of the reasons I love Burberry so much (I finally have a more articulate thought than "Ooo!"): Every collection is a brilliant interpretation of that classic Burberry trench. Whether offered as is or slimmed to blazer proportions or lightened in airy knits or deconstructed entirely (see how those straps, meant to echo the straps workers use to sling coats across their shoulders, look like the belts of the trenches?), the coat repeats over and over and over. Fantastic.

Bottega Veneta.

The BV men this spring are in a hurry--look at that sexy Rob Patt vampire bedhead! It's a composed hurry, admittedly (this guy totally has these ensembles laid out and ready to go the night before), but I don't like it any less for its slight lack of authenticity--the haphazard scarves, at least, are nicely careful and careless at the same time.

Iceberg.

Perhaps my favorite of the men's spring offerings, Iceberg's collection is centered on the classic boy garments: jackets and pants. But every imagining of them here is light and easy, proportioned realistically, and paired smartly with bright sneakers and loafers. The clothes are insanely wearable--and it's nice to see a pair of boyfriend jeans on, well, the boyfriend.

So, I think my immediate and all-encompassing love for this collection says something about me: Watanabe said flat-out the idea was "snobbish" (and maybe that's why men were sporting ascots and pocket squares). I am betraying this collection a little by not picturing the bright monotones that hit the runway toward the end of the show--I preferred the pastels, myself, like the palest pink featured. Paul Smith makes an inspiring suit (always has), and for spring 2010, they just got lighter and brighter until they were almost shimmering there...perfect.

I bought this dress maybe three years ago for maybe $20. And I love it; it's a consistent favorite (I've actually taken blog photos with it, but said photos were either lost to other people's cameras/computers or otherwise unusable). It's so versatile; it can be layered, it can be belted, it can top tights and a turtleneck in winter--I admit I love most to just let it do its poufy thing. And it's really, really comfortable.

I've said before I don't think shopping from mainstream stores is a bad--or unfashionable--thing. It's a good way to get basics--and sometimes, cool basics like this dress, which I'll keep wearing until it doesn't fit or falls apart.

I meant to talk about how hot it's been (not a day under 90 F). I meant to talk about how sometimes, in such conditions, clothing loses all meaning, really. I meant to say at the very least taking photographs in the dark is only sometimes a good idea as this skirt is really hot pink. Turns out I'm going to talk about how sometimes, clothing is absolutely the least important thing to talk about.

This has been a strange day. I remember the night I found out Elliott Smith died--I dropped my whole bag right there in the street, all its contents spilling all over R Street in downtown Lincoln. I cried. I didn't believe it. I wore black for a week.

Today, I found out Michael Jackson died after reading a news item online and finding what I thought was an embarrassing, bogus headline on TMZ, which I never read.

But it was true.

I feel like the world should feel different now. It almost does.

Tomorrow, maybe, it really will.

reader question no. 12: the date outfit, summer edition.

This week, in honor of only style remains the same's still-most-popular entry and the upcoming summer holiday--and in light of the wicked heat and humidity in Omaha--I present inspiration for five popular summer date activities. Here's to us hitting every one of them before the leaves turn.

1. The Dinner Date.

You'll notice in all the looks I present today I generally avoid accessories. True, I am not a big accessory girl myself (as noted many a time), but I think in wretched heat--the heat index in Omaha the last two days has been 107 F--too many baubles just make you sweatier than you want to be, especially on a date. Instead, look for pieces with special details: an architectural skirt, a beaded sandal, a sparkly clutch. You won't need accessories at all.

2. The Sport Date.

So, let's face it: Whether your date wants to hit a baseball game or the zoo, you're going to need a relaxed look at the ready, and my best advice is to go for an easy knit one-piece, be it a dress or a little strappy romper. Pack a big canvas tote with water, snacks and, most importantly, sunblock, and you're casual, collected and cool.

3. The Backyard Party Date.

I always feel like attending at least one house party in the summer--and I don't even like house parties. There's something about them perfectly suited to unbearable heat, cold drinks and a little snookie in a corner somewhere. Sundresses can easily become evening wear for dressy-casual affairs when they're a little more refined: Here, a clean wide strap, classic shape and neutral shade are a snap to dress up with a floral clutch and pretty sandal.

4. The Drinks and Dancing Date.

Why we'd want to hit the club in summer is, at first, a mystery: Isn't the point of going out to, you know, stay indoors? Not so--a little dancing gives us gals the perfect reason to sex it up sans tights (and not freeze when we leave the way we do in colder months). But that doesn't mean you can't pick an appropriately sexy dress suited to, uh, "glistening" whilst gyrating inside or hanging out outside. A draped knit won't cling when it isn't supposed to (and a dark shade will mask any unsightly heat effects, too).

5. The Day Date.

I doubt anyone actually has a picnic anymore, but to me, the summer day date says, yes, picnicking. Or maybe it just says this Topshop carousel bag, which I must must must acquire. Anyway, keep the summer day date ensemb light, playful, bright--summery. You could just as easily opt for a pale blouse, sheer scarf and full-leg short; anything airy will do just fine.

Now, just go find yourself a stunner of a boy.

As I've been looking at all the collections every season the last few years, I've started to most anticipate pre-fall and resort collections. Perhaps I'm drawn to their inherent commercial nature--or maybe I just appreciate their inspirational qualities as they occur during a season when they can really be worn--but I've started to find them imminently more wearable than the collections of any other season. And this year, resort had just so many spectacular offerings.

3.1 Phillip Lim.

This little collection had me with that first floppy bow. I love interpretations of classic Chanel, especially when they're presented so youthfully. Lim shows how essential little tailored jackets and cardigans are to every wardrobe--they're not stuffy. They're so, so easy.

Abaete.

Perhaps the most obviously "resort" of my picks, Abaete's collection makes a flippy tennis dress and pleated skirt immediately wearable wherever it's worn. And I can't not mention the cool new-vintage vibe presented--a little '80s color, a little '70s shape. It's basic preppy made fashionably aware.

Burberry Prorsum.

I will never, ever tire of Burberry. Christopher Bailey might even be my new favorite designer, thanks to his cool recasting of slip dresses, fluid pants and cardigans, tough and sweet and simple every season.

Chris Benz.

Chris Benz is an amazing utilizer of color; he considers it, bends it, makes it interesting. Of course, his flowy shapes here are interesting, too, but they wouldn't be if not for the cheeky shades--the makeup-colored slip dress, at least, has a flip of pink at the hem that makes it (especially for a summer away) a little less serious. I suspect the Chris Benz girl is a lot of fun.

Derek Lam.

My favorite. Clean, smart, lovely. I bet you could have guessed that.

Missoni.

I think the pant looks here are just fantastic--and here, the '70s nod is absolutely right for this house. I love the balance of volume, too; so often, we're not inclined to pair a boxy top and wide pant, but when you do, they're forgiving and flattering at the same time.

Rag & Bone.

I am almost always a fan of Rag & Bone's men's offerings, and I love how the aesthetic of those lines cross over with the women's lines. This boyish collection is perfectly tailored--the woman's shape is never lost.

Vera Wang.

I have becoming a bigger and bigger fan of Ms. Wang's non-bridal work, and this breezy collection prooves why: It's just elegantly unfussy. I appreciate the way the clothes are built around movement--I doubt they'd ever fall out of place.

In the continuing saga of Lindsey Wears Little-worn Skirts, I drug this old tutu-esque number and tried to actually do something with it. And, just as I thought the first time I wore it, I wished it was shorter and poufier--more like an actual tutu instead of just tutu-inspired. Sometimes, I think it's just as it should be to wear grown-up clothes (and in spite of this being made for little girls, it really was matured), but I don't think that applies to something so specific; in this case, I think the more dreamlike, the better. And, well, this just isn't my dream of a tutu.

It looked fine, really, but it might not appear here again. Unless I can find a really lovely seamstress who can whip it into proper poufy shape. Otherwise, without the heart to just chuck it entirely, I think it might wither away at the end of the closet.

Some of my favorite photos for the blog have been those done in parts--self-portraits bit-by-bit until you get the gist, some a little hazy, some just a specific detail: a bend, a crease, an overlap.

As we start year two of only style remains the same (and after much debate, both internally and here on the blog), I think I'm going to take the photos to that place...a little artier, I suppose, but risks are necessary in fashion. And in life.

I am so excited about today's question, which comes from reader Sahana, who's preparing to start college in one of India's more tropical (and more traditional) cities, Vellore. (The above photo is actually of Balamathi, a cooler-temperature and, I think, insanely pretty village about 30 minutes outside Vellore.)

"I do want to look pretty without offending anyone," Sahana said, "so could you please give me a list of a few basics I should own to make sure I can look stylish and modest at a go? I'm going to the south of India, a place called Vellore, which is quite close to Chennai. It's technologically modern, but still quite conservative, and I'd say they'd go more for, say, skirts--more full-length clothes; shorts and cut-offs are not an option. Temperatures can go up to 40 C, so that's a major worry. Traditional isn't necessary...maybe churidars or salwars, but they don't mind jeans and stuff, again, as long as I don't show too much leg or arm."

Here where I live in Nebraska, where temperatures can easily reach three digits in the summer--101 F is not uncommon--I can relate to Sahana's worries: 40 C is 104 F, and that's ridiculous hot when you add humidity and long sleeves and pants.

First, I thought we'd take a quick look at some basic examples of traditional Indian dress, featuring the salwar and churidar kameez Sahana mentioned:

On the left is a salwar kameez, a long tunic with drapey, tapered pants; on the right is a churidar kameez, the same type of tunic with fitted, bunched-ankle pants. At first glace, for Americans, these looks might seem entirely culture-specific--but when you think about it, we have, right now, some quite popular Western interpretations:

Fashion has always been--and always will be--globally inspired, after all. And based on that sort of modern-traditional inspiration, along with considered fabric choices, I think there are some key items girls in tropical locales can have in their wardrobe arsenals, Western or otherwise.

1. The Maxi Dress.

I think the biggest thing to consider when dressing for hot weather is to remember to avoid anything too tightly fitted--which is also totally appropriate for conservative societies, as well. The looser the clothing, the more air can circulate through it, meaning you'll be cooler. This flowy dress is airy and, thanks to its cotton construction, breathable--but it's still totally feminine. To avoid showing too much arm, add a pretty pastel wrap (look for sheer options) and finish the look with flat sandals and a tote roomy enough to stash books, notebooks and, if you take it off, that shawl.

2. Wide-leg Linen Pants.

Long noted as a warm-climate favorite, linen is always cool--literally. The fabric saps up moisture almost as quickly as it dries again, which means while you will get wrinkled, you won't have to get damp. I still love the wide-leg silhouette; it's clean and classic and chic, especially with a gauzy tunic top and flat sandals. I love this series of eco-chic totes from Candy Kirk, too, but an unadorned bag would be just fine as long as it's relaxed.

3. Knitwear.

For most of my four-and-a-half years of college, I refused to wear pajamas to class (classes before 11 a.m., however, were a different story). But some days--even now, nearly five years after my graduation--I still wanted the comfort of at-home clothes. Dressier knits are staples every girl needs to have, and here, both full-length harem pants and an ankle-grazing skirt are comfortable and, trend-wise, on-point. I've paired each with a tunic-style blouse just to bring in a bit of traditional femininity; chunky wedge sandals make otherwise baggy ensembles a little edgy.

4. Light Denim.

You're also going to certainly want a pair of jeans in the rotation; the most summery will be those made of lightweight, light-wash denim. Again, I chose a wide-leg pair to let air circulate, and I topped them with a light, loose, three-quarter-sleeve top. The trick here is to keep everything easy. Simple open-toe slingback flats let feet breathe, too.

5. The LWD.

Let's face it--one of the greatest things about college is the boys, right? Invariably, you'll want to have a standard date outfit at the ready, and a little white dress is a cool, heat-deflecting counterpart to the LBD on balmy nights. When you can't expose the whole leg--and most basic (or, like this one from Tibi, elaborate) shifts hit above the knee--a light pair of long-length leggings make the outfit modest-yet-youthful. Pick some pretty accessories and you're ready for whatever the night holds.

Sometimes, working with words all the time, I forget what a visual learner I am--always have been, really. I always needed to see the geometry proof all worked out to the end.

I think I might mix up the photos here, too--I feel myself sliding into a rut in general. And I don't know if on-location photos are the answer after all. So, with a little inspiration and a little patience, we'll see where things go.

I love knitwear in the summertime--it's just so comfy. I found this skirt for a super sale price while scoping out some knit dresses--I love the lovely color. And I was reunited with this big ring last weekend when I opened a clutch I hadn't used for two years--I love finding things that way. Now that I've been wearing this posey again, I think rings might become my accessory of choice. At least for a little while.

In other news, I finally got around to burning a new copy of my Bon Iver album, and I can't stop listening to "Re: Stacks." I've loved it from the get-go, but it's such a sweet, heartbreaking way to fade into the quiet night.
